Evaluation of activities
The evaluation of the doctoral students' activities is discussed and formalized in the exams for the transition from one year to the next, on the occasion of which the doctoral student presents and discusses in front of the Academic Board a report on the activity carried out and the results achieved.
The criteria for passing the year change exams are those specified below.
- Adequacy of the research project presented by the PhD student. This project:
- it must have a structure consistent with the reference criteria for the scientific field of general sociology;
- it must show sufficient knowledge of the state of the art and the ability to choose a methodological framework consistent with the research topic in a reasoned manner; it must report in sufficient detail the research questions and the relevance of the expected results, the methods of data collection, the methods of analysis envisaged, a discussion regarding any ethical issues and regarding the critical issues and limitations that could be encountered, and the ways to address them;
- it must provide in principle for the implementation times (Gantt chart or similar).
- Continuity and effectiveness in active participation in the dedicated training program, proposed by the Doctorate: attendance at lectures; contribution to seminar activities through individual study, carrying out any exercises required and preparing presentations or papers; achievement of positive evaluations in teaching activities in which an evaluation is expected.
- Participation in seminars and scientific conferences at local, national and international level: participation as an auditor in the conferences and/or seminars indicated as compulsory in the course programme published annually on the web is required; participation in further scientific initiatives is also positively evaluated.
Any publications on topics of interest to the PhD programme are also taken into account (both scientific and professional publications are taken into account, provided that the Board considers them to be of good quality according to the relevant scientific-disciplinary criteria) and any other activities relevant to the doctoral student's training path (e.g. study or research stays in other Italian or foreign locations; collaboration in teaching activities universities; professional activity in the field of welfare or volunteer or internship services, provided that it is compatible with doctoral training).
- Adequacy of the progress of the research project, to be documented in a written report highlighting the correspondence of the progress of the project, in terms of research activities and temporal development, with what was previously approved by the Board; or gives detailed reasons for any changes introduced;
- Continuity and effectiveness in active participation in the dedicated training program, proposed by the Doctorate, according to the same criteria specified for the transition exam from the first to the second year;
- Participation in seminars and scientific conferences at local, national and international level. At a minimum, the following are required:
- the candidacy of a proposal for intervention (abstract) at a national or international scientific conference or seminar, and
- participation as auditors in conferences and/or seminars indicated as mandatory in the course programme published annually on the web; participation in further scientific initiatives is also positively evaluated.
Any publications on topics of interest to the PhD programme are also taken into account (both scientific and professional publications are taken into account, provided that the Board considers them to be of good quality according to the relevant scientific-disciplinary criteria) and any other activities relevant to the doctoral student's training path (e.g. study or research stays in other Italian or foreign locations; collaboration in teaching activities universities; professional or voluntary activity or internship, as long as it is compatible with doctoral training).

- Adequate oral presentation, in front of the Board, of the preliminary results of the research project;
- Continuity and effectiveness in active participation in the dedicated training program, proposed by the Doctorate, according to the same criteria specified for the transition exam from the first to the second year;
- Participation in seminars and scientific conferences at local, national and international level. At a minimum, the following are required:
- the candidacy of two proposals for intervention (abstract) at a national or international scientific conference or seminar, and
- participation as auditors in conferences and/or seminars indicated as compulsory in the course programme published annually on the web; participation in further scientific initiatives is also positively evaluated.
