CORSO DI DOTTORATO
Social Work and Personal Social Services
Milan
Organization and governance
In line with the interdisciplinary nature of the Doctorate, the Academic Board is composed of scholars belonging to research groups in the fields of sociology, psychology, law, philosophy, social work, welfare policies and services. The disciplinary field of Social Work is represented by some of the leading Italian experts and members of the Relational Social Work research group (the only Italian university research group that deals specifically with Social Work). It is also strengthened by the qualifying presence of international scholars.
Each of the members of the Board actively contributes to the Doctoral Course through teaching activities specifically dedicated to doctoral students and/or the supervision of doctoral research.
The Board is integrated by external experts from the National Council of the Order of Social Workers and other professional organizations in the legal, health, educational, social-welfare or social-health fields.
Other university professors and non-permanent researchers also collaborate with the Board. The latter support the professors in some training and tutoring activities aimed at doctoral students and in the organization of the doctoral course.

A representative appointed by the students of the Doctoral Programme participates in the meetings of the Board in an advisory capacity. Consultation of student representatives is provided for in each commission in charge of making decisions relating to the overall structure and organization of the Doctorate and is expressly requested in the agenda of the meeting of the Board annually dedicated to the approval of the plan of teaching activities.
Students independently manage the appointment of their representative and a substitute and formally communicate their names to the PhD Coordinator.
At the request of the interested parties, the Coordinator is in any case available to meet the student representatives at any time, for any question deemed useful for the smooth running of the Course.
For the aspects of connection to the professional field of social work, the Doctorate has availed itself of the collaboration of the National Council of the Order of Social Workers (CNOAS) since its initial establishment.
A Steering Committee is being set up, to be consulted every three years.
Considering the interdisciplinary structure of the teaching staff and the international propensity of the educational offer, the PhD programme is aligned with the objectives of Project 3.3 (Enhancement of researchers) of the University Strategic Plan (2023-2025). In particular, the Doctorate facilitates and strongly recommends the entry of doctoral students into the disciplinary community of Social Work, also at an international level; during the ongoing and final assessment, the Board focuses on the progressive acquisition of skills relating to international standards of scientific design, research ethics (with specific attention to research ethics for Social Work), and dissemination of study results (which in the field of Social Work can have a concrete impact in the field of Welfare Services and practices). In this regard, the entry selection criteria also already aim to enhance profiles with a strong aptitude for scientific research, both in the academic and professional fields (action 3.3.b).
Finally, given the specific curvature of some general research areas towards the issues of social and economic sustainability, the PhD is also easily included in Project 5.3 Enhancement of the University's activities on sustainability.
