The doctorate

The International PhD in Criminology is a training program for highly qualified students who intend to pursue the title of PhD in Criminology. The doctoral programme places interdisciplinary work and research at the heart of its activity. Its vision is to promote innovative and dynamic ideas by combining theory and practice in the field of criminology, criminal justice and crime prevention.

The Doctorate trains professionals able to meet traditional and emerging standards of excellence in the criminological sector. This goal is achieved through a specific program that combines training, research and teaching. Career opportunities are academic careers, research, law enforcement, international organizations and multinational and consulting companies.

The International PhD in Criminology provides a wide range of opportunities for students. Below are listed just some of the strengths of the Doctorate:

  • The members of the Academic Board, who lecture and tutor in the Doctoral Programme, are internationally renowned professors and researchers in criminology and related subjects. 
     
  • In addition to  scholarships funded by universities, the International PhD in Criminology has always obtained additional funding from companies (such as ADT, Crime&tech, Eni Corporate University, Gucci, Pirelli, TIM and Telecom Italia), associated universities (such as the University of Teramo) and public bodies (such as the High Commissioner for the fight against counterfeiting, Lombardy Region and Autonomous Province of Trento).
     
  • PhDs in Criminology have access to career opportunities in academia, as well as in public and private bodies, NGOs, and international organizations. Some currently work at the following institutions: University of Cardiff, University of Surrey, UNIL-Université de Lausanne, University of Milano-Bicocca, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan, Italian Government, University of Trento, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, European Commission, Eurojust, Louis Vuitton, PWC, SNAM, Small Arms Survey, UNICRI, Save the Children, Chanel, Amazon.
     
  • The successful candidates of the PhD scholarships will collaborate in the management and organization of Transcrime's projects and research activities, together with a staff of over 30 members. In the last decades, Transcrime has carried out more than 300 research projects, mostly as coordinator, funded by local, national and international bodies and institutions, such as the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 programs, Horizon Europe and the DG Home Affairs, the Italian Ministry of the Interior, the Trentino Region, the Lombardy Region, as well as private organizations.
     
  • As part of our Programme, PhD students will have the opportunity to broaden their academic experience by spending a semester of study and research at a foreign university or research institute. Some of the institutions that have hosted our students in recent years are: Carnegie Mellon University, European University Saint Petersburg, the United Nations, World Bank, Interpol, Europol, George Mason University, Organization of American States, New York University, University of California, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Manchester, University of Maryland, University of South Florida, Leiden University, Vrije Universiteit.
     
  • Once the period abroad at one of the partner universities has been successfully completed, doctoral students will be able to receive the title of Doctor Europaeus.
     
  • All PhD activities are in English: lectures, seminars, doctoral theses and final discussion.
