Period abroad

A stay abroad is a fundamental opportunity to enrich the academic and scientific path of doctoral students. The period of research and study abroad is optional, unless otherwise provided for, for example, by the type of scholarship. To spend a period of study abroad, you need to consider the instructions below.

DESTINATION SELECTION

The destination of the period abroad is identified by the PhD student in agreement with his/her tutor and the course coordinator. After that, the destination is approved by the entire Academic Board. The choice of destination must be based on the research topic of the doctoral thesis. The doctoral student, therefore, chooses a host institution where professors or researchers conduct research related to the doctoral student's area of interest. Applicants are encouraged to consider periods abroad during the second and third years of the doctorate, or in any case after the research work within the doctorate is adequately outlined.

DURATION

The period of stay abroad ranges from a minimum of 3 months to a maximum of 6 months, but shorter or longer periods may be considered for specific needs.

RESEARCH AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES

Research and training activities must be agreed with the professor or supervisor of the host institution and may include, for example, participation in research projects, seminars, conferences, lectures, presentations of the doctoral thesis to students and colleagues, activities related to publications and development of the doctoral thesis. Other training activities, not strictly related to academic activities, are related to the opportunity to establish relationships and contacts with professors, doctoral students and researchers of the host institution.

REQUEST AND APPROVAL

The request for a stay abroad is made in advance in agreement with the supervisor and the coordinator of the doctoral programme. The request must be formalized by sending an email to the supervisor and coordinator, containing a proposal of one or two possible destinations. This will allow the request to be placed on the agenda of the Academic Board meeting. The approval by the College will be necessary to proceed with the planning of the stay and the formalization of the bureaucratic aspects.

TIMES AND BUREAUCRATIC ASPECTS

Planning is important, especially for destinations that require visas or involve complex bureaucratic procedures. It is the responsibility of the PhD student to ensure that he/she has all the necessary information and documents for the stay abroad, in accordance with the local laws and regulations of the host institution.
