Research budget and foreign integration
Research budget 10%
Università Cattolica grants all PhD students, with or without a scholarship, an annual research budget equal to 10% of the gross amount of the annual scholarship.
The research budget can be used by requesting reimbursement of expenses strictly related to the research activity and to be submitted by email to the Doctoral Office. The request must always be pre-authorized by the Course Coordinator.
Reimbursable expenses: travel expenses, conference registration, software licenses, bibliographic material and publication expenses.

1. Application form, receipts and expense reports
- Fill in all the required sections in the form based on the available proof of purchase (receipts, invoices and receipts) and sign the form;
- Fill in the excel expense report sheet (download) indicating each expense and in the "Proof of payment" column where you can find the relevant proof of purchase within the documents.
2. Authorisation of the Coordinator
Before submission, the form must be signed by the Coordinator of the PhD Programme.
3. Send the request by email to the PhD Office
After authorization, send all documentation (form, proof of purchase, and expense report) to the email address dottorati.ricerca-mi@unicatt.it
For travel expenses in Italy relating to food, accommodation, travel and transport carried out by non-scheduled public bus services ( taxi and NCC expenses) must be paid by traceable means in order to be reimbursed without taxation (Law No. 207 of 30 December 2024, Stability Law 2025, Article 1, paragraph 81, letter a).
Traceable means of payment include: debit, credit and prepaid cards, cheques, bank transfers, payment apps linked to a current account, MAV.
N.B. These indications refer only to travel expenses in Italy.
Travel expenses abroad can also be reimbursed with prior authorization, even if paid in cash.
Research stays abroad - integration and insurance policy
To enrich their training and research work, PhD students undertake study and research stays abroad, subject to agreement with the supervisor and authorisation of the PhD Programme Coordinator.
All doctoral students, with or without a scholarship, are entitled to a supplement for a stay abroad, equal to 50% of the amount of the scholarship, for the entire period of their stay abroad, regardless of the duration and up to a total period of up to 12 months (18 months for doctorates in co-tutorship).
Before departure, it is required to fill in and sign the Application form for stay abroad for study and research purposes. The form must be signed by the Coordinator for authorization, before being sent by email to: dottorati.ricerca-mi@unicatt.it
After receiving the form, the Doctoral Office will send the applicant the information documents regarding the insurance coverage guaranteed by the University for the entire period abroad.
