Career Development
Digitalisation and innovation
Prof. Antonio Sorrentino
On 9 March 2021, the European Commission presented a vision and perspectives for Europe's digital transformation by 2030. The Commission proposes a Digital Compass for the EU's Digital Decade that is built around four cardinal points: skills, secure and sustainable digital infrastructure, the digital transformation of businesses and the digitalisation of public services.
Digital technologies have a profound impact on the way we live and do business. A systematic and forward-looking research and innovation strategy is key to a more productive and green economy, which is why states must have the capacity to reap the benefits of an increasingly digitalised society and to meet the challenges it brings.
The availability of information and the ability to manage it effectively are critical factors in the performance of every activity. New technologies bring rapid change and drastically transform the ability to capture and analyze data, do research and bring innovation to the world around us.
The course consists of 3 meetings and focuses on both theoretical and practical aspects and is designed for students from all faculties.
Objectives
The course aims to introduce the fundamental concepts related to the functioning of the IT infrastructure aimed at understanding its organizational complexities.
The main opportunities offered by new technologies are also analyzed in order to reflect on how they can be used both in terms of academic research and practical applications.
Finally, the course presents methods and concepts for identifying innovation opportunities and their implementation methods.

The internationalisation process of higher education: role and tasks for academics and young researchers
Today we are living in an interconnected and global world where the Internationalization of High Education (IHE) is, as a matter of fact, already taking different forms under different academic context.
But what is IHE exactly? Moreover, how are PhD students and early-career researchers (already) part of it, and how can they contribute to fostering a culture of internationalization in the local academic context and for what purpose?
Goals and content
A general overview of global trends and actual scenarios ruling IHE will be provided. A case study on internationalization strategy will be presented and analysed: positive aspects as well as possible constraints will be discussed. A specific focus on teaching and learning in international classes will be provided, giving hints about how to change difficulties into opportunities.
Internationalization of the Academic curriculum will be discussed, and different strategies will be analysed. This course also intends to stimulate awareness on the IHE topic as well as increase critical analysis in PhD students and early-career since, being already part of it, they can contribute to the co-creation of an international academic culture, becoming "champions" of the IHE process.
